Saturday 25 June 2016

We had a very nice meal at Dimitri’s with the Luries last night.  I still wasn’t very hungry and I couldn’t cope with any alcohol (strange in their company).  They had Marina with them, which was interesting as we hadn’t met up in years.  We got back to the boat rather late and both just conked out.

The alarm went off early because we are expecting Bob to come and help put up the mainsail.  R is still convinced that the new gate in the mast is the wrong size.  Bob was just a few minutes late, but all went well and the sail was properly put up.  It was just a case of the spring in the gate being new and stiff.  After a cup of coffee (all we had for breakfast) Bob went off and R continued to do the reefing lines on the sail.  By the time he was done it was nearly 10:30am.   We have to get in to town to do a load of chores before everything closes down for the weekend.

So we rush off to town in a taxi.  First stop the Vodafone shop to get a new sim for my phone to make Greek calls and new top ups for the internet hub machine.  While I waited in the queue (there is always a queue at Vodafone wherever we go)  Richard went to the chandlery to get a new hose pipe.  The internet hub was not working properly, so we had to leave it with the shop to sort out.

While that was being done we decided to go to the Supermarket recommended which delivers to the boat.  It was a longish walk in the very hot weather, but worth it.  Other than the fact it had no fresh fruit and veg it was great and we managed to buy everything I thought I needed to manage for the next three days.  I have only bought food I can cook on the BBQ, so I don’t have to use the cooker in the heat.

We then managed to find a bank to get more cash and  to stop for a cold drink and a pastry to make up for our lack of breakfast.  At the Vodafone shop they have solved the problem with the hub and we have lift off.  However, we have spend 90 euros and their credit card machine doesn’t work, so we have to spend a decent portion of what we just took out of the bank.  Then a quick dash to the greengrocers to buy fruit and veg.  We get back to the boat just in time.  The supermarket man is just about to leave having put all the bags on the boat!

We are now about ready to start out.  We only have one more problem.  When I made coffee this morning we realised we have almost no gas for the cooker.  We have one empty bottle and one with just a bit in it.  We should have thought of this yesterday.  The upshot is that we can’t get a new bottle until Monday.  So the question is do we go out and come back for the gas or just stay here or just move to the bay where we can anchor and swim.  We can’t make up our mind.

While R was trying to sort out the gas the electrician came.  He has the new part for the fridge.  It takes him about 10 minutes to install it.  So that is another thing we don’t have to worry about.

So as we cannot make up our minds whether to go or stay, we go for a swim.  We were told there was a beach just around the corner.  Well, it isn’t really a beach.  It is all stones and is at the side of the marina.  But in our clever swimming shoes we bought last year we have a nice dip and cool off   Back on the pontoon we hose ourselves down with our new hose.

I have decided to wash our linens, which we are sleeping on, but were left over from use last season.  The cost of the machines here is exorbitant, but needs must.  We also invite an English couple from across the pontoon for a drink.  Olwyn and Alan.   They are just holidaying on the boat here in the Marina because Alan is being treated for cancer and can’t manage to take the boat out.  They are very nice.  They used to own a Southerly 115!

After drinks we light the BBQ to cook some steaks.  We started out far to late and only finish eating at 11pm!  Also because it is so dark the steaks are overcooked.  We must remember to BBQ in the light next time.

The temperature seems a little bit better.  I am below in the saloon with the fan on and it is quite acceptable.  Maybe the extraordinary heat wave is finishing.

We still haven’t decided what to do tomorrow.  I guess we will decide in the morning.
